“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message.”
Have you ever heard someone say, “This world is not my home”? That’s a very sobering reminder - that this lifetime is very short in light of eternity. No doubt, Christians should carry a Kingdom perspective within this life as opposed to being caught up in that which does not last. However, it is also very important to remember that we as Jesus’ followers are called to be the light of the world. We have been put on this earth for a very important purpose.
Jesus prayed that his followers - both then and now - would be covered with a spiritual protection from the Father that would allow us to be an effective light for the rest of the world to see the love and glory of God. Jesus prayed that we wouldn’t get attached to this world while he is using us to be effective within it. It takes a great deal of discernment to determine how to passionately share the Gospel in word and action - journeying within the world while not becoming attached to it. The way we determine the direction God wants us to go is found through prayer and a deep, consistent connection with God and the guidance of the Spirit. While this is challenging, it truly is incredible that God chooses to use us in sharing his love with the world!
Father God, help us remember that each day - even the most seemingly mundane - is a gift to bring us closer to you and an opportunity for you to use us to share your love with others. Help us take this responsibility serious, Lord, trusting that we have a role to play in your redeeming work. Thank you that you choose to use us. Thank you for your love.
