If our lives are simpler – if less of life is spent on acquiring more and more things to be managed – there actually can be more time available to simply be quiet. To present ourselves to the Spirit and tune into what the Spirit says in that still, small voice that is constantly speaking in our lives that are often too noisy to hear. The word from the Lord to his people Israel is that strength for living is found in quietness and trust. The Hebrew word translated quiet is the word for being still, as in “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46) The Isaiah text says that the people refuse to be still and choose to handle the crisis by running away on fast horses which causes their enemies to pursue them on even faster horses. But the Lord’s invitation stands: be still. Find your strength in connection to me. To make more space for the Spirit in our lives, stillness is needed. Time where the pace of life can be slowed, and the noise of life can be stilled so that the voice of the Spirit can be heard.
