Today’s scripture: Proverbs 3:1-8
Stillness and solitude lead to surrender – one final discipline to cultivate to make more room for the Spirit’s presence in our lives. It’s not surrender in the sense of fatalism – what other choice do we have? It is absolute trust in God to be true to his promises. But it’s more than that. It’s a conviction that God will come through even when the odds seem to be stacked against you. Paul’s testimony in 2 Corinthians 11 and 12 illustrate this powerfully. Throughout suffering that could have caused him to give up, God stood with him and provided everything he needed. Surrender was a choice for Paul – a willingness to see that until he trusted Jesus with every part of his life, Jesus was not in fact Lord. And when he made that choice, surrender became a cherished gift – one that he embraced willingly, because “when I am weak, then I am strong.” The more he surrendered his life to Jesus the more faithful he found Jesus to be in caring for him which led him to embrace surrender even more in his life.
