MISSIONS in 2023

The current mission partnerships are Fishbone Ministries in Butler, PA; The Center in Stockton, CA and Proyecto Alas in Talanga Honduras. During the summer of 2023 there will be 3 opportunities to serve these mission partners. There will be a local opportunity to serve this summer at Fishbone (application due by April 2), a national service week in California and an international week in Honduras (applications were due by January 22). We encourage you to fill out a short-term mission team application or talk to the mission teams coordinator or team leaders. Please keep all of these mission partners in your prayers, as they strive to serve their communities in new ways, and for those they serve who have great difficulties to overcome

International Partnership:  Proyecto Alas, Talanga, Honduras

Missionaries:  Steve and Lindsey Poulson

We have been sowing seeds of faith in Honduras since 2013, and we are currently supporting community development and mission work in the town of Talanga, Honduras at Proyecto Alas. The project is led by missionaries Steve and Lindsey Poulson, and their goal is work with the Honduran leaders of Talanga to empower young people and families.

Proyecto Alas’s ministry focus is to reach children and young people who live at high social risk, are in danger of becoming street children, or live on the street. Among other things, these youth are much more likely to suffer from depression, to attempt suicide and to become drug users.

The vision is to see transformed children and youth transform a nation. A key part of the ministry is the Transition Program, which aims to support those aged 18+ into a sustainable and positive adulthood. Proyecto Alas ministers to the most at-risk children and youth in Honduras by connecting them with well-trained, Christian mentors.

Vision:  To see transformed children and young people transforming the world

Mission:  To provide the most at risk, street-connected children and young people in Honduras with a Christian Mentor who is trained and equipped to help them realize their potential and live a life of abundance

Foundational Verse:  He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge. Psalm 91:4 (NIV)

National Partnership: The Center- Stockton, CA

Missionaries:  Justin and Ashley Guest

The National mission partnership for Butler First Church is serving with Justin and Ashley Guest at The Center in Stockton, CA. FUMC has been serving in missions with the Guests since 2013.  We began our relationship with them in Honduras and have now moved with them to their new mission in California.

The Center, located in Stockton, California, is touching the lives of thousands of children and youth each year. The Center is an after-school drop-in center for at-risk kids ranging in age from preschool through high school. The majority of these children are from single-parent families, many of which are consumed by drugs and/or alcohol and the gang lifestyle.

Working under the motto, “Giving faith, hope, and love to inner-city kids and their families,” The Center offers alternative activities to kids who would otherwise be home alone or running the streets. Such activities include Bible Club, recreation, crafts, snacks, camps, and the Learning Center. These programs are geared to teaching the kids the skills they’ll need to become productive members in their communities. More importantly, the kids are introduced to Jesus Christ, giving them a constant in their lives so they can make good decisions and live for Him.

Contact the FUMC mission team coordinator for opportunities to serve at The Center.

Local Partnership: Fishbone Ministries, Butler, PA

Fishbone Ministries is a faith-based community outreach ministry located on the Island in Butler, PA. Our mission is to strengthen and encourage a community of people by serving as ambassadors of Jesus Christ. We do this by providing physical, spiritual and emotional support to our community through programs geared for children, youth, and adults. We love our Island neighborhood and pray to see hearts young and old turned to Christ.

Our desire at Fishbone is not to simply provide charity. Our calling is to build relationships with the childrenand families we get connected with. Throughout the year we try to foster these relationships we’ve built by providing them with the things they need, creatingopportunities to feel safe and play, and share the love of Christ through the way we love them. One of the eventswe do every year is our backpack giveaway. Each yearwe’re able to give away more backpacks and schoolsupplies than the year before. We do this with the helpof so many people who donate supplies and give of their time to serve hundreds of people in the park withdinner, games, and music.
